It all started in the 1980s when Kruse's mother couldn’t maneuver her manual wheelchair through her hallway. It was then that Kruse came up with a concept for a smaller, rounded, super-maneuverable power wheelchair that could “turn on itself.”

Kruse built the first Hoveround power wheelchair while at the university of South Florida with the altruistic goal of helping people with disabilities reach books on the seventh shelf of the university library. He consulted with a number of groups related to seating, comfort, construction and materials including truck drivers for seat advice and NASA for high end materials. Today, that first power wheelchair has grown to a stable of mobility devices that can be tailored to suit a client’s specific needs.
